The D.C. Circulator will offer special service to folks who hope to see the new National Museum of African American History and Culture on opening day, Sept. 24.

Large crowds are expected to attending the opening ceremony for the new museum. Free tickets to the event and for opening weekend were gone shortly after they were made available last month. The grand opening ceremony will begin with an hour of music starting at 9 a.m., with the dedication to follow at 10 a.m. President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama are expected to attend.

Tickets are not required to attend the outdoor ceremony. The museum will officially open at 1 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 25, it will open from 10 a.m. to midnight.

With Jefferson Drive NW and Madison Drive NW scheduled to be closed on opening day, the D.C. Circulator will operate a modified version of its National Mall route. The closest stops to the museum will be on 12th Street SW and Independence Avenue SW directly across from the Smithsonian Metro station exit.

Here are the scheduled stops:

Saturday, Sept. 24:  7 a.m.to 2 p.m.

Union Station (on E Street NE at Columbus Circle)
Independence Avenue at 4th Street SW
Independence Avenue at 6th Street SW
Independence Avenue at 12th Street SW


Here are the Circulator stops on the National Mall route for Sept. 24, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 24, 2  to 8 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. (Museum Loop)

Due to road closures after 2 p.m. on Saturday and all day Sunday, the route will be modified to serve only the museum loop. Service will resume as usual on Monday, Sept. 26.
