Car2Go hit a milestone Tuesday — passing 2 million members worldwide, the company said.

The car-share service now has 800,000 members in North America, 1.1 million across Europe and 100,000 in Chongqing, China, where it set up shop in April.

“Car2go has a unique growth story,” said Olivier Reppert, Global CEO of car2go in a news release announcing the milestone. “Car2go was first to market with one-way free-floating carsharing in 2009, and since then we have been able to captivate more people in more cities. We are planning for consistent growth.”

Car2go and its distinctive blue and white Smart cars landed in D.C. in 2012 and since then its membership has grown steadily.  An agreement reached this summer made it even more appealing to some commuters, allowing cross-river trips between the District and Arlington. The company has more than 57,000 members region-wide. Company representatives also recently announced they were overhauling their D.C.-area  fleet, upgrading 250 of the 800 vehicles it currently offers for rental.

As part of its “celebration” car2go offering new members a break on the $35 membership fee. For a limited time, you can sign up for free using the code “JOINC2G.”

Car2Go allows members to borrow cars, use them for as long as they need and then park them in legal on-street parking spots within its coverage zone. No reservations are required. Cars can be located and unlocked via smartphone.
