Update (3:08 p.m.)

Quaid now says a bit about an RV breakdown in D.C. was a joke.

Quaid tweeted President-Elect Donald Trump asking for help after, he said, his RV broke down and he needed a room in D.C. so he could attend the inauguration. He later tweeted “I’m serious,” adding the hashtag “#Naug”.

Friday will kick off a quadrennial commuting nightmare, as hundreds of thousands descend upon D.C. for the inauguration of President-Elect Donald J. Trump.

But for many, the travel troubles may have already begun. Among them: Actor Randy Quaid, of “National Lampoon’s Vacation” and “Independence Day” fame, who just can’t seem to catch a break these days. When we last heard from him, Quaid was taken into custody along with his wife as they tried cross from Canada into the United States, after seeking “refugee” status there, and fleeing a host of legal problems.

On Tuesday, inaugural festivities ushered in the latest chapter in the Quaid saga when, he said, his RV broke down — leaving him searching for inauguration lodging in D.C.

“RV broke down looking for a room in DC for naug!” he tweeted to President-Elect Donald Trump, using shorthand for the inauguration.

“I’m serious,” he added later, this time adding the hashtag “#Naug”.

Trump had not responded at the time of publishing. The inauguration has been notoriously devoid of celebrities, many of whom were reported to have declined to perform in protest of Trump.

But Quaid is one celebrity who appeared enthused about partaking in the “soft sensuality” of the 58th inauguration, as it was described by inaugural committee chairman Tom Barrack.

Quaid, the Golden Globe winning actor and bushy-bearded older brother of actor Dennis Quaid, has more recently been known for a slew of bizarre run-ins with authorities. As the Post’s Arts and Entertainment section wrote in September 2015, at the time of Quaid’s arrest on the U.S. border:

The arrest was the latest chapter in the puzzling history of Quaid and his wife Evi, who for half a decade have been “on the run” from a celebrity-killing organization they refer to as the “Hollywood star whackers.” The couple filed for refugee status in Canada in 2010, saying they feared for their lives in the United States. The whackers, they claimed, were responsible for the deaths of actors David Carradine and Heath Ledger.

Quaid, who is the older brother of actor Dennis Quaid, was also running from a slew of legal problems. He and Evi were first arrested in 2009 for leaving a Santa Barbara, Calif., hotel without paying. In 2010, they were arrested again for living in and damaging a guest house on the property of a home they once owned. In between, there were multiple missed court appearances, arrest warrants and headlines such as “What the hell happened to Randy Quaid?

Tuesday’s setback, however, apparently didn’t quell Quaid’s “Naug” spirit.
