Vultures cause backup along southbound George Washington Memorial Parkway in McLean, Va.

A group of turkey vultures — munching on some dead animal — is causing a backup of traffic Thursday evening along the southbound side of George Washington Memorial Parkway near Route 123 in McLean, Va.

U.S. Park Police officials said the backups began around 5:30 p.m. near Route 123, also known as Chain Bridge Road, and stretch about three miles toward the Turkey Run Park exit. The vultures are on the side of the road, and it is not clear what they are eating.

But officials reminded drivers to keep moving and not gawk and cause bumper-to-bumper traffic.

“They’re just vultures,” said Sgt. Alice Wilson with the Park Police. “There is no crash.”

“They’re not bothered by the traffic,” she said. “It’s dinner time.”
