Part of New York Avenue in Northeast Washington has reopened after an earlier fatal crash in which three vehicles caught fire.

The outbound lanes of New York Avenue at Bladensburg Road are open, but the road headed inbound is still closed.

All lanes of New York Avenue NE in the District have been closed after a fiery fatal crash that involved multiple vehicles.

The roadway is shut down in both directions from US 50 to Bladensburg Road NE.

Few details were immediately available as to what happened, and it is not known how long the road will be shut down.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area. Traffic delays are mounting.

D.C. Fire Department officials said in a Twitter message that the crash happened early Friday morning and involved four vehicles. Three of the vehicles were on fire. One person died, another was trapped and two other people had lesser injuries, officials said. The name of the person who died was not immediately released, pending the notification of relatives.
