The highway was closed for nearly four hours after two crashes, including one that involved a pedestrian who was struck and killed by a vehicle.
It is not immediately known what caused the crashes and the person’s identity was not released. The delays have stretched up to 10 miles in the morning rush hour.

Authorities say the major traffic backups that have shut down the inner loop lanes of the Capital Beltway near Van Dorn Street in Alexandria are the result of two incidents, including one that involved a pedestrian being struck and killed by a vehicle.
Virginia State Police said the crashes happened just before 5 a.m. and few immediate details were available. The name of the person who was killed has not been released at this time, pending the notification of relatives.
Officials said it was also unclear at this time how the two crashes happened and if they were related. Crews were still on the scene, reconstructing the incidents. Traffic backups along the highway stretched for roughly 10 miles just before 8 a.m.
Transportation officials reported that many drivers had been stuck for hours on the highway and asked other drivers to avoid the area and use alternative routes. It is not known how long the highway will be shut down.
In an emailed statement, Virginia State Police said the crashes happened near each other. One crash involved two vehicles and the second crash involved a pedestrian being struck and killed by a vehicle.
Police said at least one other person was taken to Fairfax Inova Hospital for non life-threatening injuries.

Major traffic delays remain on the Capital Beltway’s inner loop at Van Dorn Street in Northern Virginia as the highway is shut down after a serious crash.
Few details were immediately available as to what happened and it was not known how many people were possibly hurt. The Beltway is closed as a crash investigation was underway.
It is not known how long the highway will be closed. Traffic backups of roughly seven miles were reported throughout the morning and reached as far as the Wilson Bridge.
Drivers should avoid the area.

The road is closed near the Van Dorn Street exit.
Few details were immediately available as to whether anyone was seriously injured and it was not known how long the roadway would be closed. Drivers are advised to avoid the area.
