A rush-hour crash was causing a miles-long backup Tuesday morning on northbound Interstate 95 in Fairfax County, authorities said.

The multivehicle crash blocked two northbound lanes of I-95 at U.S. Route 1, the Metropolitan Area Transportation Operations Coordination program tweeted. The backup on the main lanes stretched for about 5.5 miles, but express lanes were open, MATOC said.

The Virginia Department of Transportation said on its website that motorists in the area could expect “major delays” from congestion.
