R.A. Dickey joins the 20-win club

It’s been a disappointing season for just about everyone on the Mets not named R.A. Dickey. (Alex Trautwig/Getty Images).

R.A. Dickey continued his storybook season by notching his 20th win of 2012 in New York’s 6-5 win against the Pirates this afternoon.

With the win, the quirky, 37-year-old knuckleballer became the first Mets pitcher since Frank Viola in 1990 to reach the 20-win mark, and continued to bolster his case for the National League Cy Young award. Washington Nationals lefty Gio Gonzalez became Major League Baseball’s first 20-game winner on Saturday and may be Dickey’s stiffest competition for the honor.

Dickey allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out 13 and walking two over 7 2/3 innings. It was the seventh time this season he struck out 10 or more hitters but the first time since Aug. 9.

In a post-game on-field interview, Dickey credited the Mets faithful on had for the matinee at City Field, saying “This is as much about you as it is about me.”

Dickey leads the National League in ERA and strikeouts (222) and narrowly missed out on the opportunity to start the All-Star Game in Kansas City.
