Kyle Bennett, a member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic BMX team, was killed in an auto accident early Sunday morning near his home just outside Houston.

Bennett, 33, died when his 2006 Toyota Tundra truck, traveling at a high rate of speed, left the road and struck a wrought-iron gate, a culvert and several trees in a residential area, according to the Montgomery County police. Bennett, who was alone in the truck and was not wearing a seatbelt, was rushing to check a break-in involving his fiancee’s car (via the Montgomery County Police Reporter).

Bennett, a three-time UCI world champion and a three-time NBL champion, was inducted into the BMX Hall of Fame in June with the 2008 Olympic BMX team.

In addition to his fiancee, he is survived by a 4-year-old daughter.
