NBA “assessing” whether to postpone Knicks-Nets opener because of Sandy

The Nets’ regular-season debut in their glittering new arena in Brooklyn is up in the air because of the devastation wreaked on the Northeast by superstorm Sandy.

The Nets are scheduled to open against the New York Knicks on Thursday in the Barclays Center, but the league, according to the New York Times’ Howard Beck, is considering its options. “Tonight’s games will be played,” Tim Frank, the league’s vice-president of communications, told Beck. “We are still assessing the situation with regards to the rest of the week.”

Presently, the situation is this: the subway and Long Island Rail Road are closed and it seems unlikely that roads will be back to normal in two days. “Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on our entire transportation system, in every borough and county of the region,” Metropolitan Transportation Authority chairman Joseph Lhota said Tuesday (via WFAN).

At this point, waiting might be advisable. As the storm was approaching, area residents didn’t seem to be in the mood for a game, with Bloomberg Businessweek reporting that ticket prices have dropped precipitously because of the storm.

The Knicks face a decision with their home opener, Friday against the Miami Heat, in Madison Square Garden. By then, New Yorkers might welcome a diversion and a walk to the Garden.
