Gilbert Arenas injured in Shanghai debut

(China Daily / Reuters)

While Gilbert Arenas and his megacontract still haunt Ernie Grunfeld’s Washington Wizards, the former All-Star isn’t having much better luck in China.

He was injured in his debut with Yao Ming’s Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association.

Arenas signed a one-year deal reportedly worth $700,000 with the Sharks last week, but limped off the court midway through the first quarter Saturday night and did not play the rest of the way in the Sharks’ 94-78 loss to Stephon Marbury and the Ducks.

“He pulled a hip flexor [muscle], he will be day-to-day … Obviously we would like to have him back as soon as possible,” Shanghai Coach Dan Panaggio said (via AFP).

“I didn’t expect this, but this is sports, this is basketball, the craziest things happen.”

And, well, this is Agent Zero, who could be out for up to seven days, according to team officials.
