Tim Tebow passed over again with Mark Sanchez named starter

New York Jets Coach Rex Ryan stepped to the podium and said, “You’re not gonna believe this …”

And then, even by the poppin’ fresh standards set by the Jets of 2012, the ridiculous happened. Ryan announced that Mark Sanchez will be the starting quarterback Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. Greg McElroy, who was named the starter when Sanchez was benched last week, suffered a concussion at some point during his 11-sack nightmare against the San Diego Chargers. Ryan admitted he was “stunned” by McElroy’s injury. The quarterback experienced a headache while lifting weights and went to the trainers, Ryan said.

If you’re keeping score, Tim Tebow has now been passed over twice in nine days for the starting gig. “Tim is not happy with that,” Ryan said.

Ya think? Ryan, you will recall, had benched Sanchez because of his turnoverpalooza, butt fumble and other indignities. That decision set Tebow off and started a lengthy game of Rex said/Tim said that ended with Tebow defending his character Wednesday.

This time, Ryan said he chose to go with Sanchez because there are only two days of practice in which to prepare to play Buffalo and Sanchez passed for 266 yards and three touchdowns in New York’s 48-28 victory in the season opener. Still, it’s an out-and-out weird way to end the season. Even Ryan agrees.

“I would say that’s pretty accurate” he said (via the New York Post’s Brian Costello), “and we’ve had some strange ones.”

Tebow will be the backup Sunday, so there’s always a chance things get even weirder before this is over.
