Norv Turner can’t say he wasn’t expecting this.

The San Diego Chargers will fire Turner after six seasons as head coach and General Manager A.J. Smith will be out of a job as well, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported. Turner admitted as much after the Chargers closed out a 7-9 season with a 24-21 victory over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday.

“Obviously, we’re going to meet with the team and I’m sure they’ll start looking for a new coach,” Turner said after his team failed to make the playoffs for the third straight season.

Turner’s team has been sliding downhill since his first season, when the Chargers advanced to the AFC Championship Game. He’s 55-4 with the team and has a 114-122-1 career record. This

Smith has drawn increasing criticism for a roster that has deteriorated. His best draft was in 2004, when he drafted Eli Manning No. 1 overall, then traded his rights to the New York Giants for Philip Rivers. Smith used the picks he got in the deal on Shawne Merriman and Nate Kaeding the following year.
