Rex Ryan leaves Jets for “personal” trip

Paging Rex Ryan. (Bill Wippert / AP)

Since the New York Jets’ season ended and the team fired general manager Mike Tannenbaum on Monday, one person has been oddly absent from the scene.

Rex Ryan, atypically, had no comment on Tannenbaum’s firing or much of anything else. The Jets canceled a press conference scheduled for Monday and then Ryan skipped a radio interview on the team’s flagship station.

Nor is the coach at the Jets’ facility today and, the New York Daily News’ Manish Mehta reports that he flew out of town this morning on what the News reported is a “trip of a personal nature.”

Although Ryan survived the purge that claimed seven NFL head coaches Monday, more changes, like the firing of offensive coordinator Tony Sparano, may be ahead. While Ryan may want to wait that out privately, NFL media policy requires head coaches to address the media at some point during the week after the regular-season finale.

Late this afternoon, the Jets said that Ryan will end his Garbo routine and address the media Jan. 8.
