Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o turned in a rather underwhelming performance in the 40 at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis.
His unofficial time in his first attempt was 4.81 seconds (watch here); he ran an unofficial 4.80 in his second.
Although the times aren’t terrible, they aren’t what scouts (or Baltimore Ravens Coach John Harbaugh) were hoping to see. Nor was Te’o, who impressively handled questions about the hoax involving his fake dead girlfriend over the weekend, a factor in his last college game, in which Notre Dame lost the BCS nationaI championship to Alabama. Although he was originally projected as a first rounder in April’s NFL draft, his performances haven’t been lighting up Lucas Oil Stadium.
Manti Te’o up again… Unofficial time on the 2nd run is 4.80. Again, not good. Lot of effort, not fluid.

Manti Te’o isn’t underperforming, he’s just not very fast or fluid. — Matt Miller (@nfldraftscout) February 25, 2013
Manti Te’o runs 2nd 40 at 4.80. The Bama tape will be more the reason he wouldn’t go Top 10-not whether he was 4.70 or 4.80.
