Denny Hamlin suffered a broken back in a scary crash on the final lap of the Auto Club 400.

Hamlin remains in a California hospital with an L1 compression fracture, USA Today’s Jeff Gluck reported. Hamlin was injured in a collision with Joey Logano and his car struck an inner wall, which has no SAFER barrier.

Austin Peyton, Hamlin’s day-to-day business manager, said the driver is stable enough to return to his home in North Carolina for further evaluation.

The crash stemmed from a feud between Hamlin and Logano that has flared verbally and on Twitter. It began at the Daytona 500 and, at Bristol, Hamlin bumped Logano into the wall when he thought Logano was cutting him off in the sprint for second place. Logano was furious and was restrained from going after Hamlin.

“He probably shouldn’t have done what he did last week [at Bristol],” Logano said Sunday, before knowing that Hamlin had been hospitalized, “so that’s what he gets.”
