Rick Pitino’s horse wins Santa Anita Derby

His basketball team has struggled in its Final Four game against Wichita State, but his horse is doing fine.

Goldencents, a horse in which Louisville Coach Rick Pitino has an ownership stake, won the Santa Anita Derby this afternoon, earning a berth in the Kentucky Derby while the Cardinals were pulling out a victory over the Shockers in Atlanta.

Ridden by Kevin Krigger, Goldencents ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.76 and paid $15, $5.40 and $3.40 at 6-1 odds.

“C’mon, Cards,” trainer Doug O’Neill said (via the Associated Press) after the race.

Flashback finished second and Super Ninety Nine was third.
