Patriots trade Jeff Demps to Bucs for LeGarrette Blount

The New England Patriots made a draft-day trade, sending Jeff Demps to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for running back LeGarrette Blount.

Tampa Bay also got a seventh-round pick for Demps, a sprinter who was a silver medalist in the 4×100 relay in the London Olympics and wants to continue his track career, with some NFL action on the side.

In Blount, the Patriots get a player who rushed for 1,007 yards as a rookie but the arrival of Doug Martin last season made him expendable — just as expendable to the Bucs as Demps, who spent the season on the injured-reserve list, was to the Patriots. Blount will may have a tough time cracking the Pats’ roster, with Stevan Ridley, Leon Washington and Shane Vereen already there.
