Former NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson has been arrested in South Florida on a charge of violating his probation.

After a hearing Monday, Johnson, 35, was placed in the custody of the Broward County sheriff’s office until he posts $1,000 bond. A warrant for his arrest was issued last week because he twice failed to report to his probation officer as stipulated in a plea bargain reached last summer in a domestic incident involving his ex-wife, “Basketball Wives” Evelyn Lozada.

Prosecutors asked Monday that Johnson be required to serve 60 days in jail, but Johnson’s lawyers contend that he missed his probation appointments because of communication breakdown.

“I didn’t do anything on purpose,” Johnson said in court.

Another hearing is set for June 3.

Johnson pleaded no contest to a domestic violence charge involving Lozada and was sentenced to a year of probation last September. He and Lozada, whom he married last July, quarreled in August after Lozada found a receipt for condoms in his SmartCar and he head-butted her. Johnson was cut by the Miami Dolphins the next day and Lozada soon after filed for divorce.
