Last year, Colin Kaepernick’s tattoos were the subject of debate. This year, it’s his choice of caps.

In the latest sign that NFL training camps cannot open soon enough, Kaepernick is being criticized for wearing a Miami Dolphins cap on the Fourth of July.

It’s the offseason and, besides, Kaepernick can wear whatever he pleases. But there was enough blowback that Kaepernick deftly responded on Instagram with a selfie of him holding a Dolphins cap and wearing a highly quizzical expression.

“This the hat y’all mad at?” he wrote. “I’m goin wear what I want regardless of what you think, all you need to worry about is the fact that I grind for my teammates and the 49ers! I plan on doin this until they won’t let me in the building! #ridiculous #y’allmustbebored”

Somehow, as’s noted curmudgeon Ray Ratto writes, “the quarterback who helped lead the 49ers to the Super Bowl has apparently failed a loyalty test drawn up by his most ardent supporters.” Maybe the best solution is if, between now and the start of training camp, he just shows up in every single cap of every single professional sports team on the planet.

Or … naked.
