Pittsburgh Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey has apologized for wearing a “Free Hernandez” cap in support of his former college teammate Aaron Hernandez.

Photos of Pouncey and his twin Mike, a center for the Miami Dolphins, wearing the caps created a stir when they were tweeted Saturday night during their birthday party in Miami. They played with Hernandez, the former New England Patriots tight end who is being held without bail on a murder charge, at the University of Florida. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to the murder of semipro football player Odin Lloyd.

“I fully recognize the seriousness of the situation involving my former teammate, and I regret that my actions appear to make light of that serious situation,” Maurkice Pouncey said via Twitter. “I apologize to anyone who was offended by my actions.”
