P.J. Hairston, North Carolina’s leading scorer, was suspended indefinitely by Coach Roy Williams on Sunday night after being cited for speeding and careless and reckless driving.

Hairston, 20, was pulled over at 4:30 p.m. on Interstate 85 outside Salisbury, N.C., and cited for driving 93 mph in a 65-mph zone, police told

The incident is the latest in a series of off-court problems for the junior guard. He was charged with speeding May 13 and has a court date Friday. Charges of marijuana possession and driving without a license, related to a June 5 incident, were dismissed July 19.

At each traffic stop, Hairston was in a different vehicle and the two previous cars, both rentals, are Haydn “Fats” Thomas, a convicted felon facing drug and gun charges in Durham. Those charges are unrelated to Hairston.

“Other issues have been written about recently that are disturbing and bother me deeply,” Williams said July 15 in a statement released by the school. “Our basketball program is based on great ideals and these issues are embarrassing. These are not common in my 10 years as head coach at UNC and they will all be dealt with harshly and appropriately at the correct time to ensure that our program will not be compromised.”
