Victor Cruz gets second opinion, vows to play in Giants-Cowboys opener

Standing with the aid of crutches and wearing a walking boot, Victor Cruz made one thing clear Tuesday: he’ll be ready for the New York Giants’ Sept. 8 opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

“Hopefully I can be back before then,” Cruz, who has a bruised heel, said. “But I do envision myself being on the practice field getting ready for that Cowboys game and getting ready to go down to Texas to play those guys.

“The MRI just showed some blood in there in the area where the swelling is, and that was about it. No tear — nothing wrong with the bone — everything’s fine, which is a good sign, which is what I was worried about.”

The Giants, though, are taking no chances, sending the MRI to a specialist for a second opinion.

“He feels better from one day to the next,” Coach Tom Coughlin said. “Now if you look at him, you say, ‘Oh my God, he’s got crutches and boot.’ So they are doing all kinds of stuff to make sure he doesn’t put any pressure on it. But he did a feel a little bit better today.”

To compensate for losing Cruz, who was hurt on the Giants’ first drive Sunday night against the Indianapolis Colts, the Giants will pair Rueben Randle with Hakeem Nicks. Third receiver options are Jerrel Jernigan, Kevin Hardy, Louis Murphy and Ramses Barden.
