FIFA President Sepp Blatter expects the executive committee of soccer’s ruling body to move the World Cup, scheduled to be played in the grueling heat of summer in Qatar, from summer in 2022.
“I would be very much surprised, more than surprised, if the ExCo will not accept the principle you cannot play in summer in Qatar,” Blatter told the Associated Press. “What will be following, this would be then decided later.”
Although temperatures can reach 122 degrees (Fahrenheit) in the summer, moving the World Cup to the winter isn’t that easy because the monthlong event would conflict with English and European soccer schedules.
Blatter said the committee would consult with leagues, clubs, national associations and players, with the soccer calendar currently configured through 2018.
