Johnny Manziel has been suspended for the first half of Texas A&M’s season opener Saturday against Rice, a rather curious resolution of the investigation into whether he accepted money for autographs.
The NCAA and A&M reached an agreement that a source told ESPN’s Brett McMurphy closes the book on the matter. The Heisman Trophy winner was interviewed by NCAA investigators for nearly six hours last weekend and it was determined that he did not receive money, ESPN reported. NCAA rules prohibit athletes from signing autographs if they know they’ll be sold, even if the athlete accepts no money, which could explain the unusual punishment.
“Johnny’s handled it very well,” Coach Kevin Sumlin said Wednesday, breaking the school’s imposed silence on the matter. “Everything around football, he’s been extremely sharp and focused.”
