Dario Franchitti remains hospitalized after having surgery to temporarily stabilize his right ankle, which was broken in a frightening crash Sunday during the Grand Prix of Houston.

“Thank you to everyone for all the well wishes,” the three-time Indianapolis 500 champion said in a statement released by Target Chip Ganassi Racing. “They mean a lot to me.”

Franchitti is expected to have another operation on the ankle after he is transferred Indianapolis. He also suffered two broken vertebrae and a concussion when his car became airborne after a collision with two other cars and struck a catchfence. He was joined in the hospital by actress Ashley Judd, whom he married in 2001. The couple announced in January that they were ending their marriage and it wasn’t immediately clear Sunday whether they had reconciled. Both tweeted “family forever” right after the announcement, though.

An IndyCar official and 13 spectators were injured when debris from the crash flew over the fence. Two spectators were hospitalized and Scott Dixon, one of Franchitti’s teammates, and Tony Kanaan visited one fan Monday.

Franchitti’s brother, Marino, added an update Monday, too.
