Oscar Pistorius is expected to face more charges in connection with the shooting death of his girlfriend last Valentine’s Day in South Africa.
The double-amputee Olympian previously was charged with the premeditated murder of Reeva Steenkamp and will be charged with illegal possession of ammunition and two other counts of breaking firearms laws. Pistorius claims he was awakened in the middle of the night and shot Steenkamp through the door to a toilet cubicle in self-defense, mistaking her her for an intruder. Prosecutors contend that he shot her after an argument.
Nathi Mncube told the Associated Press that the charges were not originally made because they allegedly occurred in the Johannesburg area. Pistorius shot Steenkamp at his villa in Pretoria. South Africa’s National Director of Public Prosecutions had to approve consolidation of the charges, Mncube said. Pistorius is scheduled to stand trial March 3.
Pistorius, according to reports in South Africa, has twice fired a gun in a public place.
