In its final year, the selection for the BCS championship managed to avoid much controversy.
Top-ranked Florida State and No. 2 Auburn finished atop the final BCS standings and will play in the national championship Jan. 6 in Pasadena, Calif.
“We all complain about the BCS, but isn’t it funny how often they get it right,” Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher said (via ESPN).
The Seminoles (13-0), who beat outmatched Duke 45-7 in the ACC championship, are the only undefeated team in the nation.
One-loss Auburn (12-1) claimed the SEC championship with a 59-42 win against fifth-ranked Missouri and a got a boost when No. 10 Michigan State upset No. 2 Ohio State, 34-24, in the Big Ten title game.
A team from the SEC has won the past seven national titles.
Post columnist John Feinstein calls the pairing an “undisputed matchup.”
FSU is 13-0 and the last remaining undefeated team in the Football Bowl Subdivision after Ohio State and Northern Illinois lost their championship games this weekend. The Seminoles’ only victory of note was over Clemson, but it was resounding: 51-14 in Death Valley. They earned their spot.
So did Auburn, which has wins over Alabama, Missouri, Georgia and Texas A&M. No one in the country can match those credentials and now that there’s only one unbeaten left, there isn’t any doubt that the Tigers deserve to be the Seminoles’ opponent.
Ohio State, which fell to No. 7 in the BCS standings, will face No. 12 Clemson in the Discover Orange Bowl.
Defending national champion Alabama gets No. 11 Oklahoma in the Allstate Sugar Bowl, in the last year before the four-team College Football Playoffs debuts.
