For Cade Foster, the days following Alabama’s stunning Iron Bowl loss to Auburn were especially difficult. After missing three field-goal attempts in the loss, he received a number of death threats.

It was a shocking example of what can happen in an era of instantaneous hyper-reaction and one very high-profile man, who, like Foster, happened to be recognized by the number 43, took notice. Former President George W. Bush wrote Foster a note that the kicker shared on Twitter and Instagram.

Bush wrote:

“Dear Cade (#43),

“Life has its setbacks. I know!

“However you will be a stronger human with time.

“I wish you all the best —

“Sincerely —
