Oscar Pistorius marked the first anniversary of the death of Reeva Steenkamp, the woman he is accused of shooting to death last Valentine’s Day, with a message on his website.

Pistorius, the South African double-amputee Olympic athlete, will go on trial for his girlfriend’s murder March 3 in Pretoria. He contends he mistakenly thought the 29-year-old model was an intruder when he shot her in the middle of the night; the prosecution will try to prove that he shot her intentionally after an argument.

“No words can adequately capture my feelings about the devastating accident that has caused such heartache for everyone who truly loved — and continues to love Reeva,” Pistorius wrote. “The pain and sadness — especially for Reeva’s parents, family and friends consumes me with sorrow. The loss of Reeva and the complete trauma of that day, I will carry with me for the rest of my life.”

Pistorius, who also faces gun charges and is out on bail, has remained in seclusion as he awaits trial.
