No. 1 seed Wichita State made another statement to its doubters Friday evening with a dominating 64-37 win over No. 16 seed Cal-Poly. Led by 23 points from Cleanthony Early, the Shockers cruised into the second round, where they’ll face the Kansas-State-Kentucky winner.
The win is Witchita State’s 35th of this so-far perfect season. Only seven teams have stayed perfect all the way through the NCAA title game, none of them with more than 32 wins. Those teams are:
1956 San Francisco Dons (29-0)
1957 North Carolina Tar Heels (32-0)
1964, 1967, 1972, 1973 UCLA Bruins (all 30-0)
1976 Indiana Hoosiers (32-0)
If the Shockers are to carve out a spot on that list, they’ll have survived a treacherous tournament road to do it: three of the past four NCAA champions join them in the Midwest Region (
Duke, Louisville, Kentucky).
