Archie Miller is the head coach of Dayton, this NCAA tournament’s most recent Cinderella story after advancing into the Sweet 16 with an upset win Saturday over Syracuse.
Sean Miller is the head coach at Arizona, top seed in the West Region, with an opportunity to reach the Sweet 16 later Sunday night against Gonzaga.
Archie and Sean are brothers. This fact is likely to be repeated at length should the Wildcats advance, which odds expect they should. By that point, one would expect CBS’s Greg Gumbel to learn the difference, because he struggled with this concept during an interview.
“Sean, I sure hope you’re happier on the inside than you appear to be on the outside because you and your brother are both in the Sweet 16,” Gumbel told Archie Miller, even though Arizona is still one victory away from there.
The interview pretty much ended there, tapering away until the feed cut off and the CBS crew entered commercial. Gumbel later returned and recognized his gaffe, saying, “Hey, most people are going to watch basketball now. I’m going to go study the Miller family album.”
