FIFA announced Wednesday morning that it had sanctioned a 14-month transfer ban on Barcelona for violating its transfer and registration rules of players under the age of 18.

The ruling means that the Spanish club will not be able to sign players until 2015.

In addition to the sanctions, Barcelona will have to pay a fine of more than $500,000 USD. The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) was fined more than $560,000 USD.

FIFA said in a statement that both the RFEF and Barcelona “were found to have violated several provisions concerning the international transfer and first registration of non-Spanish minors with the club, as well as other relevant regulations with regard to the registration and participation of certain players in national competitions.”

Barcelona has asserted that no players on the club are “in an irregular situation” and plan to appeal the sanctions to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The club has 90 days to make its case.
