Steve Masiello is getting a second chance at Manhattan College.

The basketball coach has been on unpaid leave since it was reported that he did not, as his resume claimed graduate from the University of Kentucky. A successful coach with a 61-39 record at Manhattan, Masiello had agreed to become coach at South Florida when the false claim came to light and the offer to him was rescinded.

“After an extensive review of the situation and extenuating circumstances, we determined that Mr. Masiello executed poor judgment but did not intentionally misrepresent himself in applying to the College,” Manhattan president Brennan O’Donnell said in a statement released by the school. “After participating in graduation ceremonies at the University of Kentucky, he enrolled in summer courses with the intention of completing his degree, but never followed through to make sure that the degree was awarded.”

Masiello, who said he is “extremely grateful and humbled” by the second chance, is believed to be about 10 credits shy of his degree.
