Shawne Merriman joins WWE

Shawne Merriman, the former Maryland and NFL linebacker, will try his hand at a new endeavor. He’s joining the WWE.

Merriman, who was in New Orleans for WrestleMania XXX over the weekend, had often attended WWE events and Rey Mysterio posted a photo to Instagram that leaked the news Saturday night. On Wednesday, John Layfield and Michael Cole announced that he was indeed “joining the WWE family” (via SB Nation’s Testudo Times) and is working out at the WWE’s Performance Center.

There’s no word yet on what his role will be, although Mysterio used the hashtag “future WWE superstar.” If Merriman, who tried out for WWE last fall but was not offered a contract, intends to step into the ring, he’s going to need a better nickname than “Lights Out,” as Brendan Darr points out. At least he has the fearsome mask part down on his Twitter avatar.

After spending most of her career in traditional print sports journalism, Cindy began blogging and tweeting, first as NFL/Redskins editor, and, since August 2010, at The Early Lead. She also is the social media editor for Sports.
