Louisville Coach Rick Pitino is again betting big on horses. Nearly a year after the horse he co-owns, Goldencents, finished 17th out of 19 horses in the Kentucky Derby, Pitino is taking another shot at Churchill Downs. He may enter his latest investment, a filly named Empress of Midway, in the Kentucky Oaks, which takes place the day before the Derby. From the Louisville Courier-Journal:

“The Daily Racing Form’s Marty McGee first reported Friday that Pitino may have bought part of the horse. Later, the coach showed up to the track to watch the filly work out and confirmed the news, saying it’s through the same partnership with which he owned Goldencents.”

So who’s this Empress? A possible winner, that’s who. Bred Sired by Empire Maker, Empress of Midway has yet to run in a stakes race, but is showing great promise. She’s won at Santa Anita Park and has since been gaining Road to the Oaks points, the Courier-Journal reports, adding this morning’s workouts were looking pretty good on Friday, too: “Empress of Midway breezed four furlongs Friday in 49.80 seconds and galloped out five in 1:02.80.”

This year’s Kentucky Oaks is slated for May 2, one day before the Kentucky Derby.
