Part car. Part mascot. Meet Razorbug.

Most college admissions departments attempt to attract students with key chains and T-shirts. The University of Arkansas does it a little bit differently — they use a tricked out Volkswagen Beetle to look like their Razorback mascot and called it the Razorbug.

Holy amazing is that a sight to see. We got in touch with Suzanne McCray, Arkansas’ Vice Provost for Enrollment Management and the Dean of Admissions, to talk about this set of hot wheels.

Who came up with the idea for the Razorbug?

Dawn Medley, director of admissions in 2005, when the car was created.

How long did it take to customize?

Three months.  It was completed in Colorado, and a staff member flew there and drove it back.

Who are the lucky souls who get to drive the car?

What kind of gas mileage does it get with all that extra Razorback swag?

Twenty miles-per-gallon in the city; 27 on the highway.

Where’s the farthest the car has traveled?

To Colorado. It is usually an in-state vehicle.

What’s the fastest the car has traveled?

The speed limit — up to 70.  No speeding allowed.

Is the interior also Razorback themed?

No, though the horn plays our fight song.

What’s it like to drive?

Traveling with the Razorbug is like traveling with a rock star. People try to take pictures while driving their own car — not good. They pull off the road when the bug pulls off so they can take pictures, and they often want to drive it. [That’s] not allowed.

Who’s the most famous person to have ridden in the car?

We have not really had famous people in the car.  The University president rode in it, but otherwise the car itself is the star.
