It may not be the prettiest or most important goal of Cristiano Ronaldo’s career, but it was awfully darn great and significant to boot.
Ronaldo was clutch, scoring his 50th goal of the season on an amazing, back-heel kick in stoppage time. It lifted Real Madrid to a 2-2 draw with Valencia and keeps the team in the thick of the La Liga title fight after Atletico Madrid lost and Barcelona played to a draw over the weekend. A victory would have been a huge boost for Real Madrid, which now needs help to win the title.
Atletico Madrid has 88 points through 36 games and Barcelona has 85 through 36 games, with the two playing at Barcelona on the final day of the season. Real Madrid has 83 points through 35 games. The first tiebreaker is head-to-head record.
Ronaldo’s goal is huge for Real. If they win out, Atletico beats Malaga and Barcelona wins their last two, Real wins the title.— Phil Schoen (@PhilSchoen) May 4, 2014
