“Showtime” and Roy Williams would seem to be an unlikely pairing, but the Los Angeles Lakers reportedly are interested in hiring the North Carolina coach.

It is not clear whether the interest would be mutual, but Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times points out that General Manager Mitch Kupchak is a UNC graduate who likes to keep Tar Heels employed.

At this point, there’s no indication that Williams would be interested in the job after declining to interview for it in 2004. Mike D’Antoni resigned as the team’s coach last month and there’s already a long list of possible hires: George Karl, Jeff Van Gundy, Kurt Rambis, Byron Scott, Tom Thibodeau, John Calipari and Kevin Ollie.

No word yet on how Kobe Bryant might react to the hiring of Ol’ Roy.

And, there’s a bit of initial skepticism about whether this would pan out.
