Jim Tressel, who led the Ohio State football team to the 2002 BCS championship before resigning in 2011 after the NCAA found he had lied to investigators, has been offered the job of university president at Youngstown State by the school’s trustees, the Associated Press reports.

The school said in a statement that the appointment is not final until contract terms are reached.

Before taking the Ohio State job, Tressel coached the Penguins to four Division I-AA titles from 1986 to 2000, also serving as the school’s athletic director for part of that time.

“After fully examining each and every candidate and reviewing the input from hundreds of individuals across the campus and the community, the Board of Trustees believes Mr. Tressel is the right individual at the right time to lead Youngstown State University,” board chairman Sudershan Garg said in a statement. “Mr. Tressel has the personality and leadership skills, in addition to widespread community support, to dramatically raise YSU’s profile and prominence across Ohio and the nation.”

Tressel, 61, comes to Youngstown State from Akron, where he had been a school administrator for the past two years and also was in the running for that school’s president job. He holds both bacherlor’s and master’s degrees in education.

After spending the first 17 years of his Post career writing and editing, Matt and the printed paper had an amicable divorce in 2014. He's now blogging and editing for the Early Lead and the Post's other Web-based products.
