The Italian Open had it’s highest-profile loss on the women’s side Thursday morning, as two-time champion Maria Sharapova went down to Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic, 6-1, 6-4, in the third round.
Sharapova, the world No. 7, entered the tournament on the heels of two tournament titles – at Madrid and Stuttgart – but could not keep up with the 13th-ranked Ivanovic.
Ivanovic’s last win over Sharapova came in 2007 in Tokyo and had lost seven straight matches to her Russian opponent. Sharapova still leads 8-3 in head-to-head matches.
In their last meeting in April, Sharapova rallied to beat Ivanovic, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, to claim the Stuttgart title.
Sharapova won the Italian Open in 2011 and 2012.
