The New York Rangers were heartened when forward Martin St. Louis chose to play a day after his mother died of a heart attack last week and they will repay their teammate by attending his mother’s funeral in Montreal as a team.
“We were able to, yesterday, work with the NHL for [the] schedule,” Coach Alain Vigneaualt said. “Marty’s [mother’s] funeral was supposed to be Saturday. [They] couldn’t move the time of the game, so Marty being the way he is, was able to move the funeral to Sunday.”
The Rangers will open their Eastern Conference finals series against the Canadiens on Saturday afternoon in Montreal.
France St. Louis died of a heart attack last Thursday and St. Louis played in Game 5 as the Rangers fought back from a 3-1 deficit to win their series against Pittsburgh.
