Penguins Coach Dan Bylsma, GM Ray Shero reportedly fired (UPDATE: Bylsma still has his job, for now)

(Associated Press)

UPDATE 11:37 A.M.

Shero has been fired, as expected, but Bylsma’s fate will be decided by whomever Pittsburgh hires to be its next general manager. So for now, he’s still the Penguins’ coach.

Change was expected in Pittsburgh after the Penguins gave up a 3-1 series lead to lose in seven games to the New York Rangers in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, and on Friday the ax will fall on Coach Dan Bylsma and General Manager Ray Shero, according to TSN’s Bob McKenzie.

Will one of them land in Washington, which is looking for both a coach and a general manager?

The Penguins will hold an 11:30 a.m. news conference to discuss the moves.

Bylsma was Pittsburgh’s coach for six seasons. After leading the Penguins to the Stanley Cup in 2008-09, his first season, they advanced to the conference finals only once: last season, when Pittsburgh was swept by the Bruins.

Fancy Stats blogger Neil Greenberg said Bylsma wasn’t to blame, pointing to the team’s lack of depth once you get past stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. That would seem to place the blame at the feet of Shero, who has been the Penguins’ general manager since 2006.
