The lovefest between Peyton Manning and the city of Omaha continues, with the Denver Broncos quarterback vowing to continue barking its name at the line of scrimmage.
“I can’t tell you how many suggestions I get on what word I should use next year — cities, states, businesses, a lot of websites,” Manning said at the city’s B’nai B’rith sports banquet Thursday night. “I am here to tell you I am sticking with ‘Omaha!’ ”
Never mind that he won’t reveal what it means and was a little cranky that the code word from his pre-snap machinations was picked up by sideline microphones. He and Omaha are now inextricably linked. There’s a penguin named Peyton at the zoo, Omaha Steaks cleaned up and a local ice cream establishment was selling “Omaha, Omaha” (orange vanilla with blue malt balls). On Thursday night, the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce gave Manning a check for almost $70,000 for his foundation for at-risk children.
“I’m very pleased to be here in the real city of Omaha,” he said. “People of this city have been very gracious to me during my visit here. This [donated money] will go a long way to help the children at risk.”
