Jared Remy, the son of Boston Red Sox broadcaster and former second baseman Jerry Remy, entered a guilty plea to a charge of first-degree murder in the killing of his girlfriend, Jennifer Martel, in their Waltham, Mass., home last summer.

Remy, 35, received a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole in the hearing in Middlesex Superior Court. He admitted killing Martel last Aug. 15 in a stabbing that occurred with the couple’s daughter, who was then 4, in the home. He had been charged the day before with threatening Martel but was released rather than being held without bail. Remy also pleaded guilty to charges of assault and battery, violation of a restraining order and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a neighbor who tried to pull him away from Martel.

He told the court today that Martel had a knife when he attacked her (which was not previously alleged) and that she had threatened to take away their child. “I don’t think it’s right,” he said (via the Boston Globe), “when women use their kids against their fathers.”

Remy had, according to a Boston Globe report, terrorized five previous girlfriends in a pattern of behavior that began when he was 17 and resulted in him receiving little more than probation. His family, at his request, did not attend the proceedings today. “I would like to say, ‘Blame me for this and not my family,'” Remy said after sentencing. “…I’m the bad apple. And if you asked my family, they’d rather have me dead than her.”

From the Globe’s coverage:

The evidence of Remy’s guilt was grotesque, overwhelming and irrefutable.

Arriving Waltham police officers, their guns drawn, encountered “a well built male’’ who walked out of a fenced rear patio of the unit “covered in blood.” Remy was not wearing a shirt, and his “socks were saturated with blood.’’

Just outside the patio, police wrote, they found Martel’s motionless body, lying in a pool of blood with a blue cloth covering her face. She had been stabbed in the neck, in the shoulders and wounded in her torso.

“There was a four-year-old female that was at the scene,” Waltham police wrote, a child later identified as the only child of the union between Remy and Martel, who had been making plans to leave her boyfriend.
