California Chrome has “signed” a sneaker deal.
Skechers has an agreement with handlers for the horse that will try to win the Triple Crown in the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, ESPN reports. Its name will be featured on the handlers’ clothing, the horse’s fly sheet, the barn and any and every place else possible. If Chrome wins the Belmont, Skechers will be allowed to use the horse in marketing for a month after the race in what is the biggest deal for a horse since UPS signed with Big Brown in 2008.
“We’re a marketing company that just happens to be in the footwear business,” Robert Greenberg, the chief executive for Skechers, told Darren Rovell. “We’re spending a couple bucks to the roll the dice and if this horse wins it all, we’ll be part of it.”
Smart. And maybe Chrome will be as lucky as Meb Keflezighi, who won the Boston Marathon in Skechers in April.
