Down 4-2 to Kennesaw State in the Tallahassee Region elimination game on Monday night, Alabama had the tying runs on base and Kyle Overstreet at the plate in the top of the ninth. With a 2-2 count, Owls closer Justin McCalvin delivered …
Yeah, that was a ball. But the umpire thought otherwise — a “disgusting” call, according to Alabama radio voice Chris Stewart — and Kennesaw State advanced to the Super Regionals in its first-ever NCAA tournament appearance.
“That’s a ball; that’s a flat-out ball,” Alabama Coach Mitch Gaspard said of the pitch, per AL.com. “The ball was not called off the plate the entire day. I was very disappointed in that last call there that we didn’t get another pitch to fight with.”
Of course, the Crimson Tide probably wouldn’t have been in such dire straits had it not gone 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position or left 13 men on base. But still, Alabama probably deserved at least one more pitch.
