Say goodbye to Roman numerals, at least as far as one Super Bowl is concerned.
For one game — and one game only — the NFL will join the modern world and take itself a wee bit less seriously with Super Bowl 50 in 2016. Then, it’s back to the Romans and the prospect of Super Bowl LIX. And LXXXVIII.
The reason is that “L” isn’t “pleasing to the eye,” the league’s vice president of brand and creative told ESPN’s Darren Rovell. (Besides, who is going to buy caps with a giant “L” on them?)
“When we developed the Super Bowl XL logo, that was the first time we looked at the letter ‘L,'” Weston said. “Up until that point, we had only worked with X’s, V’s and I’s. And, at that moment, that’s when we started to wonder what will happen when we get to 50?”
There are two logos for the game, which will be played Feb. 7, 2016 in Levi’s Stadium. One is simple, the other is more regional has fog-shrouded San Francisco landmarks.
