Texas Tech recruit dismissed for allegedly punching women’s basketball star

A football recruit has been dismissed from the Texas Tech team after he allegedly punched one of the women’s basketball stars during a pickup basketball game over the weekend.

Nigel Bethel II, an incoming freshman cornerback from Miami, struck Amber Battle Saturday, breaking a bone in her face during the game in the student recreation center. Battle, according to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, was expected to undergo surgery. Battle was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder last season.

Texas Tech has “a zero-tolerance policy on this type of behavior,” the school said in a statement Sunday. On Sunday, Battle tweeted: “Pray for me y’all.”

Bethel was the team’s highest-rated recruit and was expected to participate in track as well as football.

Police are investigating the incident.
