Clint Dempsey scores for Sounders in first game since World Cup

Clint Dempsey acquitted himself very well in the World Cup, scoring two of the United States’ five goals. He made his return to MLS action Sunday night, and wouldn’t have been blamed for not noticing much difference in the atmosphere. Dempsey plays for the Seattle Sounders, who are far and away the MLS leaders in average attendance. On Sunday, the Sounders hosted their archrival, the Portland Timbers, with the result that over 64,000 fans packed CenturyLink Field.

Dempsey did not disappoint. With the score 0-0 in the 71st minute, a Sounders corner kick set off a furious sequence of shots and Timbers saves. The sequence ended with Dempsey slotting the ball in from near the right post. Goooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllllllllll!

Dempsey’s score turned out to be the game-winner. Seattle would tack on another for a 2-0 win. And the USMNT captain wasn’t the only World Cup hero for whom Sounders fans could cheer; DeAndre Yedlin, an unlikely star in Brazil, also played in Seattle for the first time since the U.S exited the tournament. Unlike Dempsey, however, Yedlin was in his second game back, after playing with the Sounders in Wednesday’s U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal match at the Timbers (Seattle won that contest, as well).

He previously had used 'Desmond Bieler' as his byline, but feels that shortening the first name to 'Des' nicely conveys his ever-decreasing gravitas. He also covers Fantasy Football.
